Charline Smadi: Population dynamics under competition and global perturbations.
Abstract:We study a stochastic model of population dynamics incorporating both competitive interactions between individuals and global perturbations. The model is formulated as a two-type competitive birth-and-death process in which individuals are regularly exposed to random catastrophes. We show that the interplay between competition and perturbations can sometimes have a counterintuitive impact on the asymptotic behavior of the system. We provide analytical criteria based on “averaged invasion fitnesses," which make it possible to qualitatively describe the system in a coherent way across the different regimes of small populations, branching in a random environment, and large populations, piecewise deterministic Markov processes.
